This touring kayak paddle is made of repurposed cedar and pine. The shape of the blade is made for high angle paddling, keeping the paddle blade close to the boat and deep in the water. Depicted on this paddle is the story of a Missouri River 340 racer who competed in 2016. The MR340 Starts in Kaw Point just out side Kansas City and goes through the Missouri River to St. Charles just before St. Louis.  Wood burned on the paddle are small details of the racer’s story, like getting caught in a storm near Miami, and not having coffee at Jeff City. Many of the iconic landmarks along the river are within the paddle, and the racer and his partner finishing at the Luis and Clark Boathouse.

#43 “Hallucinations on the MR340”

Touring Kayak Paddle – Height 15.8cm/Length 240cm/Depth 3.8cm

Finished February 2020 – 105 hours of labor – Donated

This touring kayak paddle is made with a solid piece of pine wood. This is a longer paddle best used for a sit on top kayak. The blade shape is a low angle paddle, keeping the paddle low and with a little distance from the boat. In 2018 I collected the hallucination stories of the the racers after they finished the Missouri River 340. This race starts in Kaw Point outside Kansas City and ends in St. Charles before St. Louis. Racers have 88 hours to complete the race during the summer heat and sleep deprived causing some racers to hallucinate, many seeing things while paddling at night. I collected 71 stories from racers, some where repetitive of other racers, and some could not physically be drawn, but I ended with 50 original stories on the paddle.

#42 “Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Arkansas”

Canoe Paddle – Height 143cm/Length 38cm/Depth 3cm

Finished April 2020 – 112 hours of labor – For Sale $2,000

This canoe rafting guide paddle is made from repurposed Cedar, Pine, and Oak lumbar. The shape of the handle and blade was formed into shape using an angle grinder and hand sander. There is a clear epoxy finish on the canoe paddle.

42 is the answer to the ultimate question of life, the universe, and everything. The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy has for a long time been one of my favorite book series. The idea for this paddle came to me the first year I started making paddles, and I have had to wait 5 years to make my 42nd paddle themed to the book. On the front of the paddle is the iconic emblem carved into the paddle blade of a ringed planet and hitchhiker thumb. Wood burned on the front is the bowl of petunias and whale hurling towards the planet Magrathea. The handle is made to be “The Heart of Gold” spaceship from the series. Down the shaft are the words DON’T PANIC which is the best advise for traveling the universe or going down whitewater rapids. The back of the paddle depicts the map of the Arkansas River in Colorado breaking down all the whitewater sections with put-ins and take-outs labeled down the shaft, ending at the Royal Gorge. On the back of the blade are the main characters of the book rafting down the Royal Gorge. There are multiple references to the book hidden within the back of the blade.

#41 “Poseidon on the Missouri”

Greenland Paddle – Height 7.6 cm/Length 210 cm/Depth 3.8 cm

Finished January 2020 – 50 hours of labor – Race 4 Last Place Award 2020

This Greenland paddle is made with a single piece of repurposed cedar. The round center handle smoothly transitions to the blades on each side, and the blades come to a triangular shaped tips. There is a teak finish and epoxy resin for protection on the paddle. In the summer of 2019, the Midwest and Missouri River was struck with heavy rains and torrential flooding devastating the region.  The Missouri 340 Race (Kaw Point to St. Charles) was rescheduled 4 times due to the flooding in and officially canceled in November 2019; thou there were a few brave soles that attempted the race late November. The wood burning across the paddle shows the Greek/Roman God Poseidon wielding his trident flooding the Missouri River. The left side of the paddle shows Roman warriors paddling towards St. Louis, and the flooded Kansas City skyline with all the building transformed into greek and roman architecture.  Behind Poseidon is the night sky and St. Louis skyline with the arch. Along the handle is all the checkpoints to the MR340 race and mile markers written in roman numerals.  The Checkpoints are written in different directions depending on which side of the river the checkpoint is located (if the Kansas City blade is in the water the visible checkpoints are on the left river bank, and vice versa).

#40 “Hollow Head Harold”

Stand-up Paddle – Height 205.7 cm/Length 19.6 cm/Depth 17.7 cm

Finished January 2020 – 250 hours of labor – For Sale $5,000

This Stand-up paddle is made with a mix of cedar, pine, oak, and willow of all repurposed wood. The blade of the paddle is hand chiseled to create the body of the giraffe and a scooped back with an exposed tail. The shaft of the paddle took the majority of the time to create the hair down the spin with a lower profile spot for a grip. The Handle of the paddle is in the hollowed out head of the giraffe with a drain hole to the giraffe’s mouth.

The smiling giraffe is named Hollow Head Harold, and is covered in pastel spots from head to toe.  The spots have wood burned borders with an acrylic stain paint to give the pastel colors. The hand carved and wood burned hair down the spin has an oil based dark walnut stain.

#39 “The Abyss”

Ocean Canoe Paddle – Height 157.4cm/Length 20.3cm/Depth 5.7cm

Finished September 2019 – 88 hours of labor – SOLD

This ocean canoe paddle is made from multiple scrap wood parts from previous paddles and various projects that I have made. This paddle took multiple days to wood glue all the different sized chunks of wood together and form it into a paddle shape. Once the paddle shape was cut, I used a grinder for the first time giving the paddle it’s warped wave like shape on the blade and handle. The blade is fiber glassed and adhered with an epoxy resin to give it better strength and protection.

The Abyss is a piece that has to be viewed at the correct angle to see a clear view with the warping of the paddle. This paddle is wood burned and multi-stain painted to give it the deep ocean look. On the blade you see a scuba diver reaching out with an angler fish attacking within the deep ocean. Up the shaft are air bubbles and the breathing tube with the light getting brighter to the surface. on the handle is the dark shadow of a shark swimming overhead.
